The Institute of Place Management is delighted that Dr Heather Skinner FIPM, below, has agreed to become the Chair of the IPM Responsible Tourism Special Interest Group. The announcement was made at this week's 3rd Corfu Symposium on Managing and Marketing Places which Heather also chairs.

Heather is now based in Corfu having moved there in 2013 following a 15 year academic career at the University of South Wales (formerly the University of Glamorgan) where she was Reader in Marketing and is a guest lecturer at a number of Higher Education Institutions. She also facilitates online learning and continues to supervise and examine doctoral theses.

Since 2011, Heather has been researching issues concerning the future of tourism in Corfu, in particular, how Corfu, along with many other mature European destinations, can address the problem of declining numbers of middle-market independent tourists from its key source markets. This work has been undertaken alongside her main research into other place management and marketing issues, with a current focus on responsible tourism.

Commenting on the appointment, Heather said "In this role I would like to develop and grow the membership of the SIG and support both the SIG and the IPM in strengthening links across disciplines and between academics, practitioners and policy makers.".

Professor Cathy Parker, who chairs the Institute's Executive Board, warmly welcomed Heather's acceptance of the new role. "I have had the good fortune to work with Heather over a number of years and to have had chance to participate in the development of the Corfu Symposium. The Executive Board believe Heather will play a significant role in developing and energising our work in supporting responsible tourism."

Heather's appointment adds to our expertise in this area and she will work alongside Professor Harold Goodwin who continues his role as Director of Responsible Tourism with the Institute.

Heather has chaired the annual Corfu Symposium on Managing & Marketing Places since its inception in 2013. There is a current call for papers (see box on top right) for a Special Issue of the Journal of Place Management and Development, focusing on papers presented at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Corfu Symposium on Managing and Marketing Places that are relevant to topics on Responsible Tourism and Place Making.

The 4th Corfu Symposium, taking place 24-27 April 2017 will focus on the theme Place Making from Various Gazes. This theme reflects current developments in both the theory and practice of place management, marketing, and branding, along with developments into our knowledge about sustainable places and responsible tourism, all of which rely for success upon the co-ordinated efforts of multiple stakeholders, each of which may have different, and sometimes competing, objectives and purposes.

The theme of the symposium also therefore supports submissions that consider both the theory and practice of place management, marketing, and branding, along with developments into our knowledge about sustainable places and responsible tourism, and which seek to further our understanding of these issues from the perspectives or gazes of the multiple stakeholders involved in all aspects of responsible and sustainable place making.
