Sustainability. Survey on survey tells us it’s something that means more and more to a growing number of our high street customers, especially but not only in younger generations. It’s an issue impacting our buildings and their suitability going forward, for logistics, for the way we run our businesses and the services they offer, and how places operate, and more.

In this IPM webinar we’ll share insights from some of the evidence-based studies being done on this issue, and hear from IPM members and partners who have sustainability at the heart of their projects in business, on public realm / street scene and beyond.

'Hight street sustainability: Environment or economic?'

Looking at the issues facing our high streets in terms of occupational challenges and the need to meet net-zero objectives. Should we rebuild or retrofit? What case for conversion to alternative uses? What do consumers actually need? Should we rethink purpose of places?

2:25 - 2:45

Romy Rawlings FLI FRSA | Founder/Director, DeepGreen Consultancy | https://www.linkedin.com/in/romyrawlings/?originalSubdomain=uk

'A Sustainable Framework for Today's High Streets'

Sustainability on the High Street - We're all chasing 'sustainability' but what does that even mean for our high streets? Should our focus be on site materials and lighting, transport options, air quality, green infrastructure, or the people that live, visit and work there? This presentation will investigate all three pillars of sustainability (people, planet and profit) and consider the actions we need to take and how we'll know if we're making a positive impact. The conversation will be framed around the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and will provide practical suggestions on how to address the climate and biodiversity crises in our urban areas

2:45 - 3:05

Tom Swithinbank | Senior Project Manager | Sustainability, Public Realm and Planning | Bristol City Centre BID and Redcliffe and Temple BID | (2) Tom Swithinbank | LinkedIn

'Business Improvement Districts and Sustainability – What is our role?'

I’ll be discussing my research into the work of BIDs in this field. This research has asked BIDs to rank the importance of sustainability, to identify barriers to doing more and to note the help that the BID industry could provide to support BIDs.

3:05 - 3:20

Dr Alessandro Graciotti | Research Associate, Manchester Metrpolititan University | Alessandro Graciotti | LinkedIn

'Does your high street have any local food experiences to offer? Sustainable placemaking and food in town centres'

Exploring how bringing local food systems to the high street can contribute to sustainable urban development.
