Manchester Metropolitan University appoints renowned civic movement leader as new Head of IPM Professional Membership Network

Ian Harvey

Manchester Metropolitan University is pleased to announce the appointment of Ian Harvey as the new Head of the Institute of Place Management (IPM) Professional Membership Network.

Ian brings a wealth of senior professional experience and a proven track record of leading Civic Voice, a prominent national network of community leaders.

In this pivotal role, Ian will provide strategic leadership to the IPM Professional Membership Network, enhancing the quality, sustainability, and vibrancy of urban and rural places. He will support our global community of practitioners and policymakers by leading the transfer of research, education, and training to the Network, while also advocating for more enabling policy for place managers and leaders.

“I am delighted to be joining Manchester Metropolitan University at this exciting time for the Institute of Place Management. IPM has a long-standing reputation for excellence, and I look forward to working closely with the academic team, members, and other stakeholders to provide the support the sector needs.”
– Ian Harvey SFIPM FRSA

Commenting on the appointment, Professor Cathy Parker MBE SFIPM said: “Ian is a highly respected figure, with a proven ability to spearhead fundamental change in both place practice and policy. We’re excited to have him join us to help achieve our collective vision of creating better places through the co-creation and transfer of knowledge.”

This appointment comes as Manchester Met continues to build on the success of the High Streets Task Force, a five-year initiative run by the IPM for the UK Government to revitalise England’s high streets. Civic Voice, an important High Streets Task Force Partner, will continue to collaborate with IPM and Manchester Met on initiatives that increase community and civic engagement in place management and leadership.

Ian will transition into his new role over the next couple of months while handing over his Executive Director role at Civic Voice, taking up the IPM post full-time from January 2025. His first responsibility will be to develop a revised membership offer for the IPM, which will include continuing professional development (CPD). Research and consultation for the new offer will begin now with an expected launch in Spring 2025. Ian can be contacted via iharvey@mmu.ac.uk.
